Talk: Voicing Power and Magic in Circe 📜 The VIU Theatre Department is thrilled to host this free event to kick off the second Colloquium of the term at Malaspina Theatre! Join us for a fascinating dive into the Magic Circle. 🪄 Speaker: Dr. Janet Grafton 🗓️ Date: Thursday, October 22 ⏰ Time: 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM 📍 Location: Malaspina Theatre This talk will explore the significance of the spoken word in magical and political contexts. And it will attempt to trace a through-line from spells and incantations to other forms of voiced expression, such as songs, prayers and political protest. The reclamation of “witch” as a gendered slur and the development of feminist voices within political contexts are tangential. This talk will use literature that focuses on spells and enchantments to explore the evolution of these projects. 🙌 Special thanks to Katharine Rollwagen, Dean of Arts and Humanities, for supporting the Colloquium Series! @viu_artsandhumanities 🔗 Visit ah.viu.ca/co
