Why You? Love, Reasons, and Irreplaceability
photo: meetupWhy we picked it
Why do we love one particular person rather than another? We might point to their kindness, humour, intelligence, or beauty. But if these qualities explain our love, could someone with equal—or better—qualities replace them? Together, we’ll explore whether love needs reasons, what makes someone irreplaceable, and whether people become uniquely valuable because of who they are—or because we love them. We’ll consider romantic, familial, and platonic love without requiring personal disclosure. No background in philosophy is needed—only curiosity and a willingness to question one of our most familiar attachments. **Suggested readings:** * [What Is It to Love Someone?](https://1000wordphilosophy.com/2020/12/09/what-is-it-to-love-someone/) by Felipe Pereira * [On loving a clone, or why love can’t be rationally justified](https://psyche.co/ideas/on-loving-a-clone-or-why-love-cant-be-rationally-justified) by Idowu Odeyemi
