The Magic of the Sator Square

$15 ($10 for Alombrados Members) The Sator Square is an ancient five-by-five Latin word square, dating back to Roman antiquity, whose words can be read horizontally, vertically, forwards and backwards. This mysterious arrangement has been employed for centuries as a magical charm and protective talisman, particularly within European folk magic and Christian mystical traditions. Despite its widespread historical use, the square’s origins, meanings, and purposes remain enigmatic. Elements of Sator magic have endured in medieval leechcraft, Cypriana, European folk practices, and amuletic traditions, including the legends surrounding horseshoes. Together, we will explore these connections, tracing the transmission and transformation of magical knowledge across nearly two millennia in this crash course on medieval magic.
