About this event
@ Voices of the Violin explores the astonishing range of the unaccompanied violin across more than three centuries. Stripped of accompaniment, a single instrument becomes many: storyteller, dancer, orator, and virtuoso by turns. The program moves from the concise, improvisatory gestures of 17th- and 18th-century preludes and dances—by Corbett, Purcell, Lonati, Telemann, Vitali, Jacquet de La Guerre, and Vilsmaÿr—to the monumental unaccompanied works of Biber and Bach, before Andrew Balfour carries that same solitary voice into the present day. Across four centuries, the question remains constant: how can four strings speak with so many voices?
