About this event

“Vampyr” (1932), directed by Carl Th. Dreyer, is a mysterious and surrealistic film that was, at times, literally shot through gauze to give it a soft-focus and an everything-is-shadows-and-motion feel. What makes all the more startling contrast to Dreyer’s previous film, “The Passion of Joan of Arc” (1928), with its hyper-realistic visuals and extreme close-ups of actors’ faces. “Vampyr” sees Allan Grey becoming involved in a mysterious curse that has one man’s daughter already under the spell of a witch with another daughter slowly getting pulled into the same fate. Grey confronts ghosts, the witch’s henchman, and his own death to rid the family of the malevolent forces. It faced mixed reviews upon release but is now seen as a landmark horror film. The film has a deliberate pace and, without any gore, manages to convey tension, suspense, and still be disturbing with its visuals and presentation.
