In this edition of GPUG, we'll explore nginx — the web server quietly powering most of your PHP applications — and how understanding it better can make you a more effective developer. Rather than treating nginx as a black box managed by your DevOps team, we'll walk through how it actually works: from the structure of configuration files, to how requests get routed to PHP-FPM, to the powerful directives available right out of the box. We'll also look at how we can solve real world problems by writing simple nginx configuration files. For many of these problems we often reach for PHP, but nginx can handle them faster, more efficiently, and without ever booting your application. Whether you've never opened an nginx config file before or you work with them regularly, there's something here for every skill level.
