Why we picked it
Newcastle Island is a little gem that often gets overlooked. It has around 22km of hiking trails including a nice perimeter trail along it's shore line and some nice interior trails. Along the way you will have nice views along with a number of historical elements highlighting Nanaimo's past. There is a camping area, a picnic site area along with a little food kiosk. The plan for the day would be to take the ferry from Maffeo Sutton Park and hike around the island till we don't want to anymore. You can really stay as long or as short as you want with the ferry to the island running on the hour and from the island on the half hour. So if we meet at the washroom area at Muffeo Park around 9:40am, get quickly organized and walk the 5mins to the ferry for the 10:00am sailing. Rain isn't so much an issue as there is a picnic shelter we can utilize for lunch. The hike is moderate, fairly easy from what I remember and though I have a 4 hour time line, we can be there for a longer or shorter
