Kizomba evolved from Semba, a traditional form of dance and music that has its roots in Angola. After gaining independence from Portugal, Angola was plunged into a civil war in 1975, which lasted until 2002. During this tumultuous period, the release of new Semba music dwindled, leading Angolans to seek musical inspiration elsewhere
