2B Day Hike - Spaulding Lake via Pioneer Trail (Placer Group)

This is a moderately challenging hike along the Pioneer Trail to Spaulding Lake in the Tahoe National Forest between Grass Valley and Truckee. The hike is approximately 5.7 miles with 980 feet of elevation gain. The pace will be moderate, with some rest stops along the way. This trail winds past Emerald Pools on the South Yuba River and through rolling hills, ending at the scenic Spaulding Lake. The trail is dirt and rock with some loose, rocky sections and moderate elevation gain. We will stop at Spaulding lake (turnaround point) for a rest and lunch along the shoreline. Option to take a chilly dip in Lake Spaulding or the Emerald Pools. After the hike, interested participants can meet up to enjoy a treat at a brewery and bakery in Nevada City.

Wildlife sightings are possible. The trail is well shaded with some exposure. Well-behaved dogs on leash and under control at all times are OK. We estimate it will take 2.5 – 3 hours at a moderate pace, including a stop for a picnic lunch alon
